Testing: one, two, three? Demonstration-scale cellulosic ethanol plant in Louisiana?
Verenium is hoping that if all the tests go well it can begin construction on its first comercial facility. Do you believe in the technology, and how important is this step in the quest to find viable alternatives to oil for energy?

why do people think cellulosic ethanol is better than corn derived ethanol for the country?
cellulosic ethanol from switchgrass is still taking land for food production to make fuel. so what do we do? do make fuel or food or both, or do we continue to import 65% of our oil from terrorist countries that hate us and want to kill us? america has the cheapest food in the world and plenty of it and the argument that ethanol is the reason for high food prices is totally wrong. yes corn prices are up in the last 2 years but does anyone know that there is only 7 cents worth of corn in an 18 ounce box of corn flakes that costs 3 dollars a box at todays corn prices. why is corn the whipping boy of increasing food costs. does anybody out there know that oil is $118.00 a barrel, its the cost of transportation and processing that is most of the cost of food. we farm for a living and we just paid $25,000 for a transport load of diesel 3 days ago, 6800 gallons for only 3.58 per gallon, wow what a deal. so lets just keep sending our money to people who want to blow us up!

Why don't the candidates and/or the MSM talk about something as important and upbeat as this? Energy & food...
prices would return to their pre-inflation value if we Americans were inspired to do a fraction of what's described on this website:
http://www.alcoholcanbeagas.net/node/518
This is NOT futuristic but quite the opposite.
This stuff was Henry Ford's favorite fuel.
Brazil grows all the fuel it needs (imports 0.0%) on 1% of its land.
The U.S. has millions of unused acres of land that could grow feedstocks for the production of enough cellulosic ethanol to power the nation.
Again: Why are candidates talking about gender and skin instead of touting solutions like this?

Panda: Ethanol wasn't the trigger.
Using CORN (read: FOOD) was the trigger.
Corn is a poor feedstock for ethanol in many ways.
CELLULOSIC feedstocks are GrrRRREAT!!!
Brazil uses sugar cane and ethanol there is cheap. We've been fooled by the media, ... again.

Cellulosic Ethanol, Alagae Biodiesel, Hydrogren. When? How much?
I've become convinced we could begin accelerating Cellulosic ethanol production immediately. (One cautionary voice still rings slightly in my ears however: "We've been "5 years away from" for 40 years...." ) Never the less I think we're ready now.
When? say you? I've read most of the "Questions" that result from a search of "Cellulosic". And I've read a lot of articles too.
There have been a lot of breakthroughs. There are several pilot plants. (I think we're more likely to see tens-of-thousands of small plants, rather than Hundreds of enormous plants, btw. For cellulosic ethanol anyway.)
With crude oil at $125 to $140 a barrel, (and forcasts of higher, but rumors of a bubble, I'm aware) and gasoline priced where it is... I think the economic pressure and incentive have to be aligned. There are enough "flex fuel" vehicles.. and diesel engines all run biodiesel equally well.
Aren't we at the brink? "Are we there yet?"
Hydrogen... I realize,,, is some years off sti

Would you gather your yard refuse and haul it to a cellulosic ethanol plant to sell?
If there was a cellulosic ethynol plant near your home that made cheap alcohol fuel for cars, would you be willing to gather yard refuse and haul it to the plant if it paid you a small amount to make hauling it worth-while?
Or, knowing it would greatly improve your nation's energy independence, would you gather and haul it for free?
Or, give it away to them if they had a route to pick it up and a route and day were established.
Everything that rots produces methane, but it is prohibitively expensive and inefficient to try to compress and contain the stuff as a fuel. Its use from refuse worldwide is merely for cooking and requires a huge pit, airtight bags, etc. And refuse from yard waste is not as efficient for methane production as is manure. So nix to using methane myself!
